BEFORE THE SCANDAL

Leadership Integrity Audit

From Pastor Will Cain’s Wolves in Wool

Private. No identifying information is requested. Answer honestly.

5 = Completely true · 1 = Completely untrue

SECTION I — PRIVATE LIFE

1The people closest to me would recognize the private person they know in the public leader others admire.
2I am not maintaining a relationship, habit, financial practice, communication pattern, or private behavior that I am deliberately concealing because disclosure could threaten my ministry, marriage, reputation, or position.
3When conviction confronts me, my normal response is confession and correction rather than rationalization, minimization, or delay.
4I can identify the appetites, wounds, insecurities, attractions, or desires that make me personally vulnerable—and I have safeguards around them.
5There is no significant area of my life in which I have begun telling myself, “Because of everything I sacrifice for ministry, I deserve this.”

SECTION II — ACCESS & BOUNDARIES

6My communication with people I counsel, supervise, mentor, or pastor could be seen by my spouse or accountability structure without causing panic or requiring explanation for inappropriate intimacy.
7I establish relational and sexual boundaries before attraction develops, rather than relying on willpower once emotional or sexual chemistry exists.
8My practices regarding travel, hotel rooms, transportation, counseling environments, private meetings, texting, DMs, and after-hours communication minimize unnecessary opportunities for secrecy.
9I recognize that spiritual authority creates a power imbalance, and I do not interpret another person's admiration, vulnerability, dependence, or consent as permission to exploit that imbalance.
10If I noticed myself becoming emotionally, romantically, sexually, financially, or otherwise dangerously attached to someone or something, I know exactly whom I would tell before acting on it.

SECTION III — POWER & ACCOUNTABILITY

11There are people in my life who can confront me, question my decisions, and challenge my behavior without losing access to me.
12The people responsible for holding me accountable are not financially dependent upon me, intimidated by my title, or primarily people whose positions I control.
13I can receive correction from someone with less status, experience, visibility, or spiritual authority than I have without automatically interpreting it as dishonor.
14I do not use spiritual language—such as honor, covering, loyalty, submission, or “touch not God's anointed”—to discourage legitimate questions about my conduct.
15If credible concerns were raised about me tomorrow, there are people with enough independence and authority to investigate them without requiring my permission.

SECTION IV — CHURCH SYSTEMS

16Our church has a clearly understood process for reporting concerns about senior leaders without requiring the person reporting them to confront the accused leader directly.
17Significant ministry finances, compensation, reimbursements, honoraria, discretionary spending, and financial decisions are subject to meaningful independent oversight.
18Employees, volunteers, members, and ministry leaders can raise legitimate concerns without reasonable fear of retaliation, humiliation, exclusion, or being labeled disloyal.
19Our church knows the difference between a pastoral problem and an allegation requiring safeguarding, independent investigation, professional intervention, or reporting to civil authorities.
20If everything currently hidden in my leadership and private life became known tonight, the people who trust me would not discover that I have been asking them to follow a person who does not actually exist.
